The Electronic Transactions Association has launched a new “Mobile Payments Committee,” an industry-wide task force of representatives from top companies in the mobile payments industry, including all four major mobile network operators – AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon.
The Mobile Payments Committee will attempt to develop and implement industry-wide solutions to policy and business issues surrounding the emergence of mobile payments in the U.S and globally. Some will say the emphasis is more regulatory and political in nature, than technical.
“Our industry must work collaboratively to ensure that the regulatory and business environment promotes innovation and cooperation,” said ETA Chief Executive Officer Jason Oxman. In part, that means education of legislators, regulators, merchants and consumers.
On the other hand, according to the ETA, the committee will help address issues such as: facilitating business relationships amongst a variety of players, in large part to ensure interoperablity of payment systems and explore best practices.
