A new analysis by Scanbuy shows growth of quick response (2D) barcodes has been exponential from January 2010, with traffic up over 700 percent. In July 2010, there were more scans in a single month than all of 2009 combined, Scanbuy notes, and usage seems to have accelerated sharply in the fourth quarter.
Up to this point, perhaps the most-common use of a QR code is to take a magazine reader to a website. But everyday consumer products now are being shipped with QR codes, and in many cases brands are creating ways for users to buy products directly from the mobile device.
A year ago QR codes were primarily used to complement short-life media such as a newspaper or magazine ad and some publishers are experimenting with ways to encourage buying of items directly from mobile devices.
